Diet Culture Woes

Author Albertsons Market Dietitian | December 31, 2024

In this day and age of social media bombarding us with messages around health, it’s important to be an informed consumer. We encourage you to look at the difference between what is sustainable versus what is a quick fix or a trend.

The twinkie diet, HCG diet, the gummy bear diet, ketosis, cabbage soup diet and so on are all examples of diets that might aid in weight loss in the short term but won’t teach you sustainable habits to lead to the lifestyle you’re ultimately looking to create.

Some quick ways to spot a fad or trend are to see what its claims are, rapid weight loss, food group elimination, rigid rules, and severe calorie restriction. Most are pretty easy to spot and others might be “packaged” a little differently.

Some quick ways to spot a lifestyle change would be to see if they are incorporating all of the food groups, finding balance in calories, questioning if it’s sustainable lifelong or just in a specific timeframe, do you like the what/when/how you’re eating, and as a bonus if there is and positive science backed research behind it. Some of our favorites are the DASH diet, Mediterranean diet, and M.I.N.D diet.
